On Sunday, June 13, Governor Ted Strickland signed SB162, the Ohio Telecom Modernization Act into law.  In a statement, Governor Strickland referred to the newly enacted law as “common sense regulatory reform”.  He especially noted the impact this can have on investment in the state saying:

"By reducing archaic red tape, we are making the state more competitive and sending a clear message to telecommunication businesses that we welcome your investments in Ohio."

TOT believes that SB 162 will benefit Ohio consumers by attracting increased investment and competition in the technology and telecommunications industry, which will help drive Ohio’s economic development and create more opportunities for job growth.  TOT applauds the leadership of the Ohio General Assembly and the Governor for working to pass legislation to benefit all Ohio consumers and to better prepare for Ohio’s tomorrow.

News from the Capitol

The Ohio General Assembly has adjourned for summer break, but not before tacking issues ranging from implementing Casinos, to naming the state’s official state amphibian.

In the final days before the break, lawmakers passed a bill to attract renewable energy projects to Ohio.  Currently Ohio ranks last in the Midwest in renewable-energy facilities. Under SB232, instead of a property tax, companies would pay an annual fee, putting Ohio in line with neighboring states.

Still left to be determined, a proposal by Sen. Jon Husted, to place a measure on the fall to create a bipartisan committee to draw legislative district lines.  The deadline for placing an issue on the November ballot is August 4.
