Last December, the Ohio Senate passed SB 162, the Ohio Telecom Modernization Act of 2009, in a 29 to 3 vote. That bill would increase competition and investment in the Ohio telecommunications and technologies markets. It will remove outdated language in current laws that discourage investment and will create a more streamlined regulatory structure. The legislation now rests with the House as HB 276. The House has held several hearings on the bill in 2009, but has yet to act this year. Passage of this bill would mean Ohio consumers could see the benefits of increased investment and competition in the techonology and telecommunications industry, which will help drive Ohio's economic growth. Campaign for Ohio Third Frontier renewal to focus on jobs
Supporters of Ohio Third Frontier are urging voters to approve $700 million in new funding for the popular economic development program by voting yes for Issue 1, which will appear on the May ballot.
"United for Jobs and Ohio's Future," a newly formed organization in support of the ballot issue, says it will emphasize job creation in its campaign. An analysis by SRI International says Third Frontier has helped create or retain 48,000 jobs since voters passed it in 2002.
Originally approved by voters for 10 years, Third Frontier was intended to put $1.6 billion into private-public partnerships. Issue 1 would fund the program four more years by issuing $700 million in additional bonds.
